Chris-Fick van Niekerk was born and raised in Piketberg in a time before WhatsApp.
He completed a BA degree at Stellenbosch University with politics, economics, philosophy as well as public and development management as his four majors. Of those, he found philosophy the most stimulating and pursued an honor degree.
To make pocket money “for noble and edifying purposes” he managed a senior residence and later an upscale student flat complex.
“My studies gave me the skills to find creative solutions for problems and to close read (which comes in handy when making sense of contracts).”
After graduating, he taught English in South Korea making diverse friends from Korea America, Ireland, and New Zealand. He traveled to Cambodia, Vietnam, the Philippines, and the USA before settling in the US for a few years to work in the book trade as well as the food and wine industry. “My years abroad helped me to appreciate other people’s views, intelligence, and how to communicate effectively.”
He also learned about sales. “One of the greatest lessons I learned at Sports Basement in Berkeley was to understand what your customer needs and not to sell them a $160 running shoe if a $50 tekkie is all they need.”
Chris-Fick joined Agrisell Piketberg in 2018 and focuses on residential properties.
His most interesting client so far? “My second most interesting client has been a creative seller who restored a 120-year-old Georgian manor overlooking the farmlands. Witnessing how they harnessed beauty and hard work and finding a new custodian for their labor of love, was something I am grateful to have been part of.” As for the Most Interesting Customer? “Well, the late Hennie Aucamp answered a similar question once in a Proustian questionnaire with something like: You never answer that question because the best is yet to come.”
In his free time, he goes for walks with his wife Kay, and their dogs, Nix and Pippa. He loves trying new recipes from Jim Layhey’s bread book and sharing meals with family and friends. And if time allows, he enjoys getting lost in a good book.
