Dawie grew up on a fruit and wine farm – Doornkloof (Pietersfontein) near Montagu, where both his parents are originally from.
After finishing school at Drostdy, Worcester, he obtained a BA degree from Stellenbosch University and became an intelligence officer in Kimberley. After which he spent a year of military service in Namibia.
Later he joined the former Distillers Corporation in Stellenbosch as a representative. During 10 years, he was transferred to Pretoria, Rustenburg, Johannesburg, and then Nelspruit. After resigning from the company, he formed his own sales/warehouse/distribution company in Whiteriver, Mpumalanga, which kept him busy for 7 years.
He returned to Cape Legends, a newly formed division of Distell looking after premium wines. He was promoted and transferred to Cape Town as Business Manager RSA Coastal and Namibia.
Leaving the company after nearly 10 years he worked as a Brand Development Manager at Deetlefs Wine Estate before returning to his hometown, Montagu. First as the Head of Sales and Marketing and later as Manager at Montagu Wine and Spiritus Company.
Dawie is passionate about people and agriculture. He is a single parent to his daughter Ashley who holds a BCom (Honors) Degree in accounting from Stellenbosch University and is currently a senior accounting officer at the VEA group of companies.
