Teacher and banker Quinten Somers understands finance.
From financing tractors to production costs, he has now added ‘property agent’ to his portfolio. He is a born Piketberger and after matriculating from Steynville Secondary High School he pursued a BTech Degree in Commercial Education and National Teaching Diploma at Cape Technikon (present day CPUT).
He worked at ABSA Bank for 23 years, starting as a credit clerk, and later got promoted to business banker. Financing production costs, farms, machinery, and implements is what the majority of his duties comprised of, as a business banker.
Quinten joined Agrisell in 2022 with a focus on agricultural properties in the West Coast area. He believes that renewable energy (solar and wind) and shortening the farm-to-table supply chain are some of the greatest opportunities for the agricultural sector in this area. What he loves about Piketberg is the peace and calm, the mountain that remains green throughout the year, and the friendly people.
His experience of working with farmers has taught him that leveraging technology and managing costs are two keys that are pertinent if you want to ‘boer vooruit’ (progress). He has a general passion for agriculture and the creativity it requires: ‘It fascinates me how someone can envisage a farm on an undeveloped stretch of land.’ Contemporary farming trends that interest him are organic and vertical farming such as the cultivation of lettuce in urban areas.
Quinten is married to Catherine. He enjoys spending time with his family including kids Quinita and Cameron, especially at the nearby coastal towns of Lamberts Bay and Elands Bay. In his spare time, Quinton likes to read and loves history. His favorite books of all time are Peter Thiel’s From Zero to One and Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers.
His top tip to buyers is advice from Warren Buffet: ‘Before you buy anything, wait a week.’
