Prince Albert’s Prince of Olives.’
This is something Jan Bothma will never call himself, even though it is true. Known locally as Jan ‘Olyf’ he was one of the first commercial olive farmers in South Africa and helped establish the olive industry in South Africa.
Jan grew up in the Prince Albert district on the farm Swartrivier and matriculated at Zwartberg High School in Prince Albert. After achieving an agricultural diploma at the Grootfontein Agricultural College and working in the sheep and fruit farming industry he returned to the family farm at Swartrivier. This is where he joined his father to manage the various farming interests which included Merino sheep, Angora goats, and lucerne.
After his father’s health deteriorated, the ‘Olive Bug’ bit and he was one of the first farmers to pioneer a commercial olive farming model. At that time commercial olive orchards were unknown in the Karoo, for the drop-off points were far away, thus olive farmers could only cultivate their olives on a small scale.
His wife Annalien, born and raised in Merweville, worked alongside him in the olive industry and together they also raised two sons and a daughter. After bidding farewell to farming, they established themselves in the town of Prince Albert. Though, once a farmer, always a farmer. This is the reason for him to approach the agricultural industry from another angle, this time as an agricultural property agent.
“My connection with Agrisell since 2015 has made an extremely positive change in my career and life course. It is especially enriching to work with other agents who have different experiences and to see how Agrisell functions as a well-oiled machine.”
