From the arid Northern Cape to the salty sea breeze of Kleinmond in the Overberg, Sister Sunshine’s life took some scenic turns.
Hetta Strauss grew up in Upington as the eldest daughter of the agriculture teacher and hostel superintendent of the boys’ hostel, Upington High School. After obtaining her B Home Economics degree at Stellenbosch University she started her teaching career at her Alma Mater in Upington where she met her husband WP Strauss. Later they moved to Cape Town where she accepted a teaching position at Bosmansdam High School where her nickname “Sister Sunshine” originated. Soon after, the couple returned to Upington where WP took up the position as a charter pilot for Walker Air Services before moving to the Strauss family farm where they farmed sheep, cattle, and game.
The nearest school was 40 km from the farmstead, resulting in Hester commuting 80 km a day to teach until both their sons matriculated. Their youngest son continued farming, while Hester and her husband retired to their holiday home in Kleinmond.
Being active and having a buoyant personality, she needed something to occupy herself with and started renting out private homes as holiday accommodations. The business soon started to grow and due to legal and technical difficulties, the business thus had to be registered. “This is when Jannie Fourie came to the rescue and I became part of Agrisell in Kleinmond.”
Hetta deals with holiday rentals and selling properties in Kleinmond.
Her advice to buyers and sellers in coastal towns: “Buy a property with a sea view. And sellers, sell at market value.”
In her spare time, Hetta loves gardening, painting, having coffee with friends, and handcrafts like crochet and knitting.
